Sepia Saturday - Excuse The Canine Aroma

Happy Sepia Saturday everyone! We're so excited to begin this weekend!

First of all, I would like to apologise for our recent absences. We have been busy indeed!

Now, I would like to share with you a funny occurrence which happened recently involving Earl! Earl - the one whom sets good examples to those younger than him - Ethel - and even us humans at times... older ones, too! This dog has special powers...

I was busy preparing for a sleepover I was going to, and Earl decided he DID NOT want me to leave. Therefore, his plan of action for the occasion was to jump onto the bags and preparations and begin to sleep all over them. Therefore I would have to move him manually to continue with my packing - and I always hate having to disturb my beloved companions from comforts! Comes the sacred camera... Yes, I did NOT move Earl from my things. I found this amusing and characterful of my beloved furry friend.

He is truly such a special little one!! And you simply have to love this in a fella.

Therefore I trundled away with my canine-smelly belongings. I planned not to have to mention anything in the beginning - however, once the coat came into things (and this did smell) I received a comment - and do you know what I said? I replied: 'Excuse the canine aroma!' - it was a hysterical moment in my life. Once again, one of these beloved moments involving a dog of some sort - I mean, its me, they have to.

Winning and Loving Fun In The Ring!

Hi all! Yesterday, Earl and I headed to another agility competition. Dog Vegas! We thoroughly enjoyed it as we always do, and came home with some fantastic results once again.

We came 1st winning our first class of the day - Graded 5(-7) Jumping!! This was a VERY twisty turn-y course, and many people struggled! We managed to get through and win the class in the quickest time with the least faults! In fact Earl was flawless bless him.

We also did well in the Money Agility Graded 5(-7) Class, we came in 4th place, with a clear round and a truly speedy time! Earl THRIVED on this this course, as it flowed lovely and he could chase me!

There were about 15-20 dogs in these so very successful classes!!

Its all so FUN FUN FUN!! There is never a dull moment competing for us!

Methods to Warm Up and cool Down Well for Dogs

Hi all! Warming up and cooling down is important for you and your dog especially when competing as we do. Here, we have some nice methods to do just this well. And if you're in a rush for a competition event taking place, you can do so in the quickest and most effective way possible!

- Walking up and down a stretch of ground and/or going on a small walk is a simple and effective way of warming up AND cooling down. Ensure this is not rushed. The purpose of the exercise is to get the muscles nice and relaxed. The most normal exercise can be used in competition scenario! Take this method out just before and just after exercise.

- Do some basic obedience with your dog before exercise - such as walking round to heel, direction movements, leg weaves, waits and recalls, walking into positions (sit down etc)

- Keeping your dog warm in between exercise is a brilliant way of ensuring those muscles stay relaxed and prepared for exercise. This is no substitute for the above method, however is a good place to start in between exercise before carrying out the above method. If you are competing make sure your dog is warm again as soon as you leave the exercise arena.

- This should be the final method - once you have ENSURED your dog has been PROPERLY and IN A QUALITY FASHION warmed up/cooled down using slower methods such as walking (two above) for an adequate period of time, you can take your dog for a gallop after a ball on soft ground such as grass. Small periods of this exercise before the real thing can be beneficial and really prepare your dog for the fast and the furious to come. This should NOT be strenuous before OR after exercise.

TOP TIP - If your dog has a tendency to become tired and less enthusiastic after runs or other forms of exercise before the real activity, you may prefer to miss the above step and stick to a gentle stroll (first method suggested) - however never go into exercise free of any warming up methods.

If your dog has any health issues or is showing signs of such please see a vet before taking out exercise. Who will then prescribe exercise regimes for your dog and his/her condition/issue. And never push your dog is he/she is not looking fit and healthy or something is wrong - you could do further damage.

Monday Mischief - Weekdays Like Weekends

For dogs in the world, weekdays are just as relaxing as weekends are for us humans. For our dogs, weekends are even more busy and productive than weekdays! Meaning life is one big party for our pets! Either this, or sleeping the days away like a king or queen! Earl demonstrates the latter with pleasure!!

Imagine if we were dogs!! No work or school - just what we want to do all day long... BUT if we were dogs, we wouldn't be able to have dogs, and love dogs and do all the doggy things we do with them as their loving owners. So... I'm good being the dog loving and owning human being that I am!!

Been Through The Toothy Wars

Poor Earl has been through the wars recently. It all started when we noticed a strange swelling on his face. The vet thought it was likely to be a tooth abscess, therefore we had him booked in for a confirming x-ray - which proved it was indeed a tooth abscess. A burst tooth abscess. Earl had a back tooth removed and is now on some medication temporarily. This couldn't have been a pleasant experience for him, and made him rather subdued. I feel for him - tooth pains are always hell. Earl is just so good at hiding pain - we could only tell when we found the lump on his poor little face that must have been in pain. And general bacteria is to blame. The vet advises we start giving Earl a daily carrot again - this slipped a little since we welcomed Ethel, I'm sad to tell you. And he also highly recommended brushing Earl's teeth using a special doggy toothbrush and toothpaste - which we will be doing with both dogs now just to be sure and safe. The sooner Ethel starts the better as well.

So there you have the problem we faced. Bacteria is mischief and much much more!

Flaked fish or chicken and rice were on the menu for one dog for the following couple of days. He enjoyed this I have to say - could I even stretch to saying it was a perk of the situation for him? He'd stretch to this for sure! His temporary medication has to also be added into his breakfast for a couple of days. Being a foodie, this wasn't hard for him at all!

The vet also recommended we keep Earl warm and rested for the course of the following couple of says especially - he shouldn't face much cold and would be feeling a little rough anyway. Which meant missing a couple of agility classes for him to recover - health before anything and I completely agree with this!

Another thing that we noticed straight away when he came home was a shaved/clipped area on his front leg. This was where the anaesthesia injection was injected into him before the x-ray and tooth extraction. This is completely normal!

The vet will usually send you home when you come to pick up your dog will a piece of paper stating the plans for the next few days, and what to look out for in your dog.

You will be advised to check the wound to make sure it is doing OK and healing properly.

The vet will often invite you back to the surgery or practice for a post-op check up to make sure everything is as it should be. If your dog takes part in any activities, you should ask when these can return to normal participation. You want your dog to heal completely and well before resuming to normal activities that may put strain on or pose a risk to the wound.

ANY lumps should be checked out straight away by a vet when you notice one!!! They could be anything!!

*This post is by no means veterinarian advice! It is simply a share of a personal experience. If you have any worries or queriers, see your own vet without hesitation.
