About feeding a Homemade diet to your dog
Many people like the concept of a homemade diet, a) because it holds many benefits, and b) because the owner knows exactly what their dog is eating, because, frankly, they have put everything into it to create the meal! Some like to go DIY, others follow the instructions for a recipe already made. Others, on the other hand, scowl down at the concept of feeding homemade, because commercial diets are made from qualified manufacturers and all the nutrients needed for your dog each meal are already there - in small pieces, of dry, easy to store, kibble!
Any details?
You know I talked about DIY and recipes for homemade food in the latter paragraph? Well. DIY is basically where the owner makes a recipe up and gives it to their dog. This can prove risky however, as, unless the owner knows exactly how to put together a meal and basically be a food manufacturer, they could miss out on involving some of the essential nutrients and items in the food that are needed for the dog to be fit and healthy, and enjoy eating their meal. Following recipes is just that - following recipes that have already been created and published professionally (most of the time, unless your surfing the internet which you cannot be so sure of sometimes, unless that person has copied a recipe that has already been created). This is more popular in homemade diets. Homemade could be either homemade raw, homemade mix, or homemade cooked.
More on deciding your way to feed
You will usually (and mostly always!) be given commercial food (usually dry kibble at first) that your breeder has been weening your puppy and it's litter onto from its mother's milk. You can then decide what you want to feed for the future. I, your breeder, and your vet will advise you to buy puppy food for puppies, adult food for adults, senior food for seniors, sensitive for sensitive dogs with sensitive stomachs or digestive systems, light for dogs who need light food due to a problem or condition, weight-loss for overweight dogs, and weight-gain for underweight dogs. Supplements can be added to most foods if appropriate which can also help with Joint Aid, Digestive upsets, ageing, etc etc etc!
What should you do?
After reading the post above, you will hopefully have more of an idea on homemade dog food and its details. There are manny reliable and helpful sources out there to help you get started. If your dog has a certain problem, a home cooked diet may be beneficial if you include what is necessary. Of course, your dog does not need a complaint to be on a homemade diet - they suit all dogs who are suited to this type of feeding, really! Make sure to gain your vet's professional advice on feeding this type of diet, as your dog may not fit into it well.
