Basically, I came home from school, took the dogs out, and noticed a lump of chewed chewing gum on the bottom of my shoe (urgh, people who spit it out along the streets disgust me). Anyway, I put the dogs securely inside and put my shoes outside for the time being. My mum then arrived home, and let the dogs out herself, unaware. After turning her back on Ethel to lead her out into the garden for 2 seconds (still saying 'come on!' to her as she went), she turned back and noticed Ethel pulling on the gum!!! She tried to get it off her, but failed. It wasn't a large bit, but then we also noticed that the rest had gone, so thought - Earl. Had he snook some? Earl is a master at sneaking.
So we rang the vet, and knowing that chewing gum's ingredient, Xylitol, is toxic to dogs, we were very worried. They told us, especially with Ethel being so young, and the bulk possibly gone by Earl, we took them up, where they took them through, made them sick, and put them in separate crates to recover afterwards for a few hours, whilst monitoring them to make sure there were no problems. We left them there, and boy did the house feel wrong without their antics occurring every few seconds, even if that just may be snoring almost silently or mooching delicately over the tiles with a non-terrier elegance.
A few hours later, we got the phone call that Ethel had thrown up a small amount of something they suspected was the gum, but poor Earl nothing - so he was sick, not for much! Better to be safe than sorry, we all agreed, smiling, as we went to collect them. They were all sleepy and sorry for themselves, but slept throughout the car journey and at home that evening, surrounded by my tender strokes and gentle head kisses.
The vets recommended we feed them a scrambled egg tea, or rice, or pasta. So as we were having eggs ourselves for dinner, we opted for scrambled eggs! I don't know if they were feeling well enough to fully enjoy it, but they seemed to.
A delicious, light tea. |
Why not their usual food? - Because they would simply sick this back up again afterwards! So its best to feed a light meal after being made sick, for the dogs sake.
As the gum had already been chewed, it was better than if it still had all the toxic ingredients still in. However, that one disgusting human, luckily, chewed out some toxins for themselves.
But luckily, my two are absolutely unharmed :-)
Xylitol is toxic to dogs is too much is consumed - even if your dog accidentally has a little bit, contact the vet! But first off, keep all gum and toxic products AWAY from your dog!
We're happy to be participating in the Thoughtless Thursday Blog Hop very kindly hosted by Ruckus The Eskie and Love is Being Owned By a Husky! - thanks again, guys!
Mom Kim here - the Beaglebratz LOVE their yogurt and I love giving them a little. But so much of it contains several different artificial sweeteners - some of those artificial sweeteners have mild side effects but xylitol almost always causes the more severe like seizures for example and a pet parent really must read the label to make sure the yogurt is safe for their canine. So glad to hear that Earl's and Ethel's experience with xylitol came out just fine.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you - a very knowledgable response.
DeleteYikes!! Why are some people so lazy dey can't throw their gum away in da trash can?? Glad ya pups is okay...
ReplyDeleteI know :-( Good :-)
DeleteGlad they're both ok! I'm sure they enjoyed their egg, along with pasta and sausages, it's one of Millie favourites!
ReplyDeleteWags and Woofs from Imogen and Millie.
Thanks, they did, heehe!
DeleteGlad it worked out alright.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteI didn't realize that gum is toxic to dogs. Or that scrambled eggs is a good dinner option after a dog gets sick. Thanks for passing on those facts to me.
ReplyDeleteIt is, and it is!!! No problem.
DeleteI'm so glad they're both okay! I worry a lot about gum because people just spit it everywhere. Thankfully, my dogs are so big that they'd need more than one piece to do serious damage. We give our pups eggs and rice when they're feeling sick too. Sometimes, I think they just fake it so we'll give them the good stuff ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah. That's true!
DeleteWell, at least dey got eggie weggies outta it.
ReplyDeleteHehe, that is true!
DeleteAw poor things. At least there was scrambled eggs. Get well.. Happy Thoughtless Thursday!
ReplyDeleteYeah. Thanks, you too!
DeleteAwww!!!! Thank dog for eggs! I can't stand when people spit their gum everywhere!!!

I'm so glad everything was OK, even though it was a rough time. At least the scrambled eggs were a yummy treat for the dogs after it was all over, something different!
ReplyDeleteAll those artificial sweeteners are bad for people too anyway. I like to chew gum though, but find some without xylitol, but still keep it well away from the dogs. It's a habit I'm trying to quit because I know it's bad! But at least I would never throw my gum on the ground.....who does that? it's so disgusting like you said.
