SO!!!!!!
Poll 3's question posed was: what do you think is the best place to walk your dog?
And we had a wonderful 4 votes which is great!
This time we had a tie between two options... these were:
A beach - 2 votes (50%)
The woods - 2 votes (50%)
So here we go.
At the beach
The beach is a great place covered with sand and sea that stretches right up to the horizon (usually!). You can also get beaches that are in a town, where there is only a small part of sea that is still deep but doesn't stretch to the horizon. When you go to the beach (otherwise known as the seaside, the coast), you will see that it is very popular with owners and dogs! Dogs love to be let off lead for a good gallop over the sand after a favourite toy, and they also love to swim after stones you throw in the sea. You need to be aware that beaches are a public place and you should only let your dog off the lead if he/she has a reliable recall and won't cause bother to other people or dogs.
Why take your dog to the beach?
Beaches make a relaxing walk for you and your dog to go on - especially when there aren't many people and dogs on at the same time as you! Your dog can get some new stimulation from the sand, the sea, and everything else a beach has in its beautiful surroundings. Make sure when you go to the beach, you pack appropriately, so your dog can drink fresh water if he/she gets to drink any salt water. Make sure your dog does not pick up any dead sea-life, seaweed, or any live sea-life that has been swept up by the sea. Make sure you don't go to far out if the tide is out, as you could find yourself and your dog having to dangerously sprint back up the beach when the tide comes back in! Maybe pick up a 'tide table' so you can go out to the beach at the correct tide times.
More on going to the beach...
Take poo pick up bags! There is nothing as bad as getting a pile of poop, no matter what the size, smell, or colour, in the middle of some golden sand, then polluting the sea when the tide comes in. It is against the law in all areas, so make sure you stick to the rules and don't be foul!
What should you do?
Locate a nice beach that you can travel to easily, and MAKE SURE IT IS DOG FRIENDLY! If you reach a beach with your four-legged-friend on the end of a leash you will be told to leave immediately. Also, check the beach rules which are normally put up clearly on a sign on a wall close to the beach. Make sure that if you are wanting to let your dog off the lead on a beach, that the rules do not state dogs have to be kept on leads at all times. If the rules of this vary at a beach you wish to go to, this could be to do with the time of year. Dogs are allowed on a beach in the cooler months and banned in the summer months on some beaches so do all your dog friendly research! If you have your dog off the lead and he causes a disturbance or distress, put him back on the lead and consider leaving.
In the woods
The woods are a lovely, cool place to go walking. There are some fantastic views in the woods, as you may even stumble across a pond and some wooden carved statues of wildlife. You may even catch a glimpse of some real-life wildlife if you are lucky! Be aware of the time of day and when people may come out with their dogs - maybe after the typical lunch period? What's your situation? If you are happiest when there are no other beings around, try going within the lunch period.
Why take your dog to the woods?
The woods are a great place to reset the mind, and the body, for both you and your dog. There are some fantastic things to see, and you may even stumble across some nature parks, ponds, and fields.
More on going to the woods...
At night and on dark days, the woods can become very dark and quite lonely. It is best to go in the daylight as if you decide to let your dog of the lead, you will be able to see him better and make sure he does not run off! If he does in the dark, you will not be able to look for him properly as it will be to dark. If you have to wait until morning this is wasting precious time you could be reuniting with your dog. Think sensibly about the extremes that could go wrong if you are even slightly careless.
What should you do?
Stay safe, be careful, be aware of your surroundings where your dog is foraging, and have a great walkies!
The other votes which got votes are:
None! The two votes that tied were the only ones which got votes!
And our winning votes, The beach and The woods got:
Beach - 2 (50%)
Woods - 2 (50%)
A fair and square tie!
Well doen and thank you for voting! If you voted, you managed to get your opinion out there to the world of what you think should be in place in the dog world! Your making one of those minor differences that counts.
