Set up a pile of fabric (clothes item in our case) and let your dog get used to it.
Then get a treat and let your dog smell it. Put it in front of his nose and lead him down to the pile. He should follow it with luck.
Now, your dog should investigate down near the mound. Say 'come on then!' in a silly, excited voice. Waggle the treat around a bit. If your dog puts his front legs on the pile - praise highly and give the treat.
Repeat until you can leave your dog on the mound with a 'stay' or 'wait' command. Whilst you repeat before this stage however, make sure to keep rewarding and add in the command 'Get On' or whatever you want. Now move away from your dog with him waiting in the Get On position. Hold your dog's gaze on a treat and reward until your dog knows the command so well his focus can be dropped to nothing but he'll remain.
Your dog should now Get On to the mound as soon as you say the command and hand signal with a pointing finger if you wish. It should be snappy and your dog should be keeping fit both mentally and physically, and having loads of fun!
Its always nice to wind down with some hide and find rounds. Hide some treats deep in the mound and let your dog seek them out and eat them. He is here giving himself the reward for finding - automatic you see! Genius! (As long as the item isn't your best sweater!).
This activity is a useful trick, super fun to teach and watch your dog perform, and keeps your dog fit in the process. Therefore we're joining FitDog Friday…

Thanks! High paw back!
DeleteEarl is a good learner! He also looks kind of "chill" about the whole thing- calm, and in control.
ReplyDeleteIs this true or does he become an excitable boy?
-Slimdoggy
He is a very calm and in control dog, yes - however, like most dogs, he does have excitable moments, and I accept that as long as he is enjoying himself, happy, and not TOO out of control!
