Pinch Punch Post November 2015

November has arrived, and Christmas will be coming in no time at all. However, for many dog owners this month, November will be the month of the year they have been dreading. Because Guy Fawkes Night will be occurring this month, fireworks will be going off from all directions. These dreaded loud bangs can pose incredibly frightening for our dogs. Further into the month, we will be doing a post about keeping your dog safe and happy during November.

The first of this month also means Earl and I will been participating in a Young Kennel Club Crufts Qualifier in both Agility and Obedience. This is Earl's time to shine, and hopefully, we will be reporting back soon with some wonderful news! We will also be attending some more regular Agility competitions, including another Nursery run for young Ethel to do. We have another exciting month ahead!

As for the month of October, we also has a wonderful time. Ethel did her first ever run in an Agility competition environment and did amazingly considering her age and experience! Although there are some things to work on, she did an amazing run, and I couldn't have been happier with my little girl! Earl also competed in several other competitions, and ran the best he has ran at competitions in a while. Oh, and Howl-O-Ween was a PAWsome celebration!

And we hope you all had an amazing Halloween!

This guy is remaining up on our windowsill!

Have a brilliant new month guys! Do you have any November plans?

Tricks For Treats & New YOU Badge & A Thank You

As we covered only a couple of days ago (see here), performing exercises with your dog is NOT pointless nor cruel. Performing exercises, for our dogs, is incredibly helpful for both their physical and mental health and wellbeing. This Halloween, if your dog doesn't enjoy going out and about seeing people all dressed up in darkness (something that can be incredibly dangerous, creepy and confusing for our dogs), doing some quiet and relaxed trick training in exchange for treats of their own is a much better plan for the weekend. Your dog can have his/her own fun this Halloween, in a way in which he is safer and more comfortable.

Have a brilliant time!

Before we go, have you seen our brand new YOU badge? Find more information on our YOU page HERE and email us! All those who email us with their answers are 101% guaranteed to feature on our blog!

Choosing Our Imperfectly Perfect Pumpkin

I am a real perfectionist in life. Whether that be ensuring my blog design is gorgeous, shooting a wonderfully crisp photo, or even the shape and size of my pumpkin. 2014's Halloween brought a huge pumpkin of ideal shape, completely scab free. When we went to the same place this year, in search of a similar specimen, they had sold out of pumpkins altogether, meaning we were forced into improvisation. Of course, someone else bought the pumpkin we liked initially (we were slow in choosing) meaning we bought our second choice... a lovely pumpkin with a clean, round front but a scabby and somewhat off balance back.  The dogs, on the other hand, don't have a care in the world, showing me how imperfectly perfect 2015's pumpkin is.

Pumpkin posers!

Creepy close up!

Now we need to carve our pumpkin! Come back soon and see how it looks!

The Reward Is In The Find

Since Earl was a young pup, I've always enjoyed hiding food/toys in the house and garden for him to find. He's always loved doing this, and has always had an able nose. However, since Ethel came into our lives, I haven't done it as much with him as I did before. Therefore, I decided to give it another go, and involve Ethel in it this time, too, in the hope that she would love it just as much! And she did!

A proud pair of pooches.

Before we began, I had to hide the balls for the dogs. I made them wait for me while I did so.

Hiding a ball.

When I released them, their eyes lit up and they were on the search.

The search begins!

Searching high and low, experienced pro Earl discovers a ball.

Once he has enjoyed his ball, he goes and helps Ethel with her ball search. Soon enough, however, Ethel discovers the complex hiding place for the ball on her own! We were all impressed with her!

Young success!

She has a good nose!

The dogs proceed to enjoying their balls as rewards. The reward for searching is what they discover.

'Look what I found!'

It was such fun! I'll be doing this again with them both soon!

Tricks Are NOT 'Pointless' Nor 'Cruel'!

It always infuriated me to hear someone telling a brilliant dog owner/trainer that teaching their dog tricks is 'pointless' and/or 'cruel'. Leaning new skills, for our dogs, is fulfilling their desire to work, keeping them both mentally and physically in good condition, broadening their horizons and stretching their capabilities as an intelligent species, strengthening the bond between human and dog, and doing all these things to the handler, as well. Therefore, as you can see, teaching your dog tricks is NOT pointless.

As for being 'cruel'... have I EVER heard anything more ridiculous in my life? NO! A simple search on YouTube should suggest to you that dogs performing tricks with their owner are NOT unhappy. ANY kind human interaction, for our dogs, makes them incredibly happy. REAL cruelty is beating a dog, shoving him/her in a cage full of his own business and underfeeding/watering him. Oh, and much, much worse. As you can see, Earl here LOVES performing with me, and so does Ethel; you can see her ear near my leg!

Does this face look unhappy to you?

To all those wonderful dog enthusiasts out there that love teaching their dogs new skills and exercises, continue to listen to your dog and enjoy him; have fun!

All in all, there is nothing I love to see more than a happy dog and a happy owner learning as a team!

P.S. If your dog doesn't enjoy tricks, for any reason, we obviously accept this! However, most dogs who are trained positively and will care and kindness adore performing with their loving owners, who only hold good intentions for their beloved dogs.

Moving On

... To another wall for all of our winnings! We have over hundreds of rosettes!

We knew it would happen sometime soon! And, following the previous weekend's successful competitions, it happened to happen then! We're up and going for more awards! More room for when Ethel acquires some, too! Never mind Earl's continuous churning of them! Haha!
