The Reward Is In The Find

Since Earl was a young pup, I've always enjoyed hiding food/toys in the house and garden for him to find. He's always loved doing this, and has always had an able nose. However, since Ethel came into our lives, I haven't done it as much with him as I did before. Therefore, I decided to give it another go, and involve Ethel in it this time, too, in the hope that she would love it just as much! And she did!

Before we began, I had to hide the balls for the dogs. I made them wait for me while I did so.

When I released them, their eyes lit up and they were on the search.

The search begins!

Searching high and low, experienced pro Earl discovers a ball.


Once he has enjoyed his ball, he goes and helps Ethel with her ball search. Soon enough, however, Ethel discovers the complex hiding place for the ball on her own! We were all impressed with her!

The dogs proceed to enjoying their balls as rewards. The reward for searching is what they discover.

It was such fun! I'll be doing this again with them both soon!

    That's great that they enjoy the same game. Oddly , out two created games to play together. However, when they play with us, they have completely different interests in the type of games they want to play.

      Playing as a duo is their thing! It is rare when they would prefer to play alone.

    Oh how awesome A game everyone can enjoy!
    I taught Cole "search" early on, and it comes in handy except when he "man-looks" meaning he does what my husband does, stand in one place and glance around. LeeAnna

    That looks like fun! We'll have to try that with Jan and see if she can sniff out whatever we hide. But we don't have much confidence in a human finding anything hidden, especially if she has to sniff it.

    That looks like fun! I see Earl has the same favorite orange ball as me. I hope mom tries this in our backyard, its kind of small though and not many places to hide things. Love Dolly

    What a fun game! We don't have a lot of good hiding places in our yard, but maybe we'll try that indoors next time we have a rainy day. Fun fun!

    Wow, that looks like great fun- good job. Kilo does not have the best sense of smell but "go chase" and "go find" are his favourite games in the house when we play with treats. He also likes to hide and find his favourite toys. He is quite a pirate. XS

    So you stuffed the ball first?

    I sometimes hide treats around the house, and make the dogs hunt for them. But I usually have to help them. :-)

    Did Earl and Ethel watch you hide them, or were you on the sneak?

      No... Usually I hide balls in one search and food in another search. I began with them watching me, then made them wait out of my sight and sent them uneducated as to the position of the balls in the garden.

    Ooo I bet they could help brown dawgs find grouse in the forest. They could get into the really tiny spots.
